--Seriously, what's with the fights off the opening faceoff? The Red
Wings and Blue Jackets were the latest to have glove-dropping
(Lightning-Islanders and Penguins-Rangers were the others), with Jordin Tootoo and Jared Boll
going at it three seconds after puckdrop. Geez, I hope this isn't a
shallow attempt to win back casual fans who like fighting. Three
opening-faceoff bouts so far this season, eight all of last season,
according to NBC. C'mon, really? Contrived. Not exactly in the spirit of
MLK Day, fellas.
--In the actual hockey part of the game, new Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was solid while stopping 39 Red Wings shots to push the game to the shootout. But he will be shown on the wrong end of the highlights for weeks to come after Damien Brunner's all-world, sick pseudo toe-drag shootout winner.
--Touted Blues' prospect Vladimir Tarasenko continues to light it up, popping a goal and adding two assists in St. Louis' shootout win over the Predators. Just what the Blues need, another talented forward. (Read that using the sarcasm font.) Blues are 2-0-0, Predators are 0-0-2.
--Goalie Ryan Miller appears to be in the zone, stopping 34 shots by the Leafs -- including seven by Phil Kessel and six by Dion Phaneuf -- to pace the Sabres to their second straight win.
--Kyle Turris has found his range, scoring two for the Senators as beat the Panthers 4-0, giving him three in two games. Craig Anderson made 31 saves for the shutout.
--The appropriately named Jets -- they will travel more than any other team in the Eastern Conference -- didn't exactly show jet lag in their game in Boston, their farthest journey east, while losing to the Bruins in a shootout. Also to know: Tyler Seguin and Patrice Bergeron still have their hands, as evident in the shootout.
--Massive Anders Lindback made 40 saves but his Lightning still lost by one to the Islanders.
--In Calgary, the Flames made a game of it after falling behind 3-0 to the Ducks. Daniel Winnik and Ryan Getzlaf scored a pair each for Anaheim, Curtis Glencross a deuce for Calgary. But whatever you do, don't ask about Jarome Iginla's contract status.
